Traditional Homestead Quick Tip: Homemade Organic Brown Sugar in 3 Minutes or Less!

There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of a baking project and suddenly realizing you’re missing an ingredient or two. That is when one must get creative and either find a substitute or make your own. I find myself in this predicament more often than not since I try to rely mostly on food I’ve put up myself while only buying the staples from our local whole foods store.

Living in this way has definitely forced me to think outside of the box {literally} and cultivate the do-it-yourself homesteader that lives in all of us.

Not too long ago, I was throwing together a blueberry crisp for my sister’s wedding when I realized I was out of brown sugar. Now, if you’re a crisp lover, you must admit that the “crisp” is a pretty important part! There was no way I was going to sacrifice even the smallest portion of that 1 packed cup of brown sugar. NO way. I called up my sister to complain about my dilemma and she said to me, “I am pretty sure you can make your own brown sugar.” Which made me pause and say, “Yeah, I’m pretty sure you can.” Well, guess what folks. You CAN make your own brown sugar. And not only is it easy, but it’s SO good. So good that no longer do I buy premade, packaged brown sugar. I simply whip it up minutes prior to baking.

Because it truly takes 3 minutes or less to make ultra soft, fluffy, homemade organic brown sugar.

Homemade Organic Brown Sugar

Step 1:

Place sugar in a medium bowl. Add molasses.

Step 2:

With a fork, begin blending the molasses and the sugar. You want to both press down with the fork tines as well as stir, to combine the two products- much in the same way as you would if you were making a pie crust.

Step 3:

Continue mixing until the sugar swells and becomes fluffy and soft. Done!

  1. That is so awesome! Great to know, especially with the holidays. Since I buy Non-Gmo organic sugar (and we don’t use much of it), this will save me money by not buying the Non-Gmo organic brown sugar. Thanks so much.

  2. I always knew that brown sugar was just sugar+molasses, but I never knew the correct ratio, and therefore never tried it! I would love to be able to mix up my organic sugar and molasses and not have to buy brown sugar any more! Awesome tip!
