Photos, Updates, and Ramblings

Sometimes I have so many things to share, but not enough about them to create its own post- so here we are today with random photos, thoughts, and updates.
Fall is quickly turning into winter with snowfall already seen and accumulations forecasted over these next few days. The chickens and ducks don’t seem to mind much. My White Faced Black Spanish hen {check out her broody, fanned-out tail!} has suddenly decided to mother our 8-week old chicks, which is convenient as she keeps them warm, shows them how to range, and keeps the bullies away.

Here are some of the babies taking advantage of the little bit of sun yesterday.

We added 7 new ducks to our flock. This Saxony female is just one of the 5 Saxonys acquired (see the rest HERE). We have 1 drake and 4 females which will form our Spring 2014 Saxony breeding program. I’m very excited to support this Critical breed!
The canning continues! Here is the “sweets” cupboard where all of the juice, jam, jelly, butters, pie filling, syrup, and applesauce are stored. We have about 100 jars carefully filed away in this space! I canned the last of the plum juice last night and have been making apple pies daily. More pie filling to come- I’m thinking at least another 2 weeks on apples, and then they too will be done.
Blog Updates:
-All of the recipe posts now offer a printable version! I know that I love printable recipes when I visit a website- it saves me from copy, pasting, and deleting photos before printing. You can find the printable version beneath the recipe title.

-I have upcoming how-to posts on canning potatoes, tomatoes, and apple pie filling. Also our DIY pallet duck houses, which cost us absolutely nothing but our time! I am also putting together a Composting 101 post, including a list of household items that can be composted that you might not have thought of.

  1. Wow Erin – I have never seen you in this wonderful, all things nature environment?! It’s incredible, truly… You must be so busy but I can tell you love this part of your life!! The ducks (excuse me if I mistake chics & ducks. I know, shame on me right?!) are gorgeous & the colours of your land are beautiful. I love that the hen is mothering & protecting the chics. And how many homemade preserves in your cupboard?? I just think it is all so wonderful & idilique. How many hours in your day?? TFS :))
